Thanksgiving Doxology
O Lord we thank Thee for this food,
For every blessing, every good;
For earthly sustenance and love,
Bestowed on us from heaven above.
Be present at our table, Lord.
Be here and everywhere adored.
Thy children bless and grant that we
May feast in paradise with Thee.
Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.
Praise Him all creatures here below.
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
All that happens becomes bread to nourish,
soap to cleanse,
fire to purify,
a chisel to carve heavenly creatures.
~ Jean-Pierre de Caussade
Gratitude bestows reverence,
allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies –
those transcendent moments of awe
that change forever
how we experience life and the world.
~ John Milton
I would maintain
that thanks are the highest form of thought,
and that gratitude
is happiness doubled by wonder.
~ G. K. Chesterton
Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh, Carol, this is really just a LOVELY post. I love every word of it! Thank you for reminding us what it’s all about. THANKFUL.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!Carrie
So, do all those verses go with the Thanksgiving Doxology? The second is the blessing I used to say at mealtimes as a youngster. Ya know, when it was my *turn*
This is one to linger over. May you be blessed. Thank you for sharing your beautiful thoughts of praise.
Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving, my dear! Thank you for this post, I also loved every word. Praising God from whom all blessings do indeed flow!
God bless you this week in all your preparations and celebrations. Thanks for the extra doxology verses, now I’m looking forward to singing it with the family on Thursday! (I’m pretty sure that with 30-some people, we can come up with at least 4 parts!)
All wonderful quotes, but I love the bread picture and Chesterton quote especially.
“Be here and everywhere adored” is a good line for a great desire of the heart. In the version I used to sing as a child, the next line went “God is love, God is love.”Blessings to you and yours for the holiday.
