The Old Woman Frying Eggs, 1618
Today is the birthday of the Spanish painter, Diego Velázquez (1599).
I love pictures of ordinary people fixing food.
What astounds me is that he painted this when he was 19!

Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor) 1656
Notice the self-portrait on the left, the blurred image of the king and queen reflected in the mirror.
The Infanta Margarita became the empress of Austria at 15, but died at 22.
Google tipped their hat to Velázquez today:
Lovely!!So glad you highlighted him. We are swamped at the office and I have my fingers in too many pots to post a real entry.
I remember my art appreciation teacher saying that a lot of artists in this period put some reference to themselves in their paintings, either an actual image of themselves or some part of themselves that they were well known for. Yes, pretty amazing how young artists were for such great paintings in those days!
so…do you really say *fixin’ food*? Most make fun of us Southerners for talkin’ like that (drawl)
I have always thought Velázquez paintings just slightly quirky and off kilter, not quite as formal as his predecessors. Fun to examine in detail!
