Kitchen Project, The Walls

This is one fine magazine.  It has wonderful essays,
recipes, reviews and pictures.  See that watermelon on the front?

Dan and Val (my youngest brother and his wife) cleaned their kitchen and
gave me eleven years of  bound yearbooks like this:

I’ve framed some full page illustrations and hung them on my wall.
The idea is to change the pictures with the seasons, but I have
only changed them with the year.

I have dead wall space above my cupboards and
a monochromatic color scheme.
What I needed was some color to vivify the place.

It’s time for the front page illustrations from Cooks.

They will go on the walls after they’ve had a fresh coat of paint.

It was fun to put the groups together.  There are many round shapes above.

I like the lines in the veggies below.

And the leftovers.  I’m excited to add a splash of beauty on my walls.
And, I have to admit, the frugal side of me is pulsing with joy.

  1. Wow!  How realistic they look!
Is it me, or is the “round” set by the same photographer?- the red pepper and the potatoes are both “heavy” in the the top left corner of their frames.  I think somebody at Cook’s likes to arrange in such a way that one’s eye is attracted from Top Left to Center Right to Bottom Center!

  2. How creative!
Now do you have bookshelves in your kitchen?  And what color will the walls be?  My kitchen gets loads of afternoon sun and we have to close the blinds in order to eat without *glare*.
More pictures when you get the chance.

  3. Lovely! What a wonderful use for those pictures! Will you take a picture after it’s all said and done? Knowing that you enjoy frugality, those frames and mats look beautifully un-frugal. Is that a splurge or a bargain? I love it!Makes me wanna do something creative.

  4. They were at WalMart. After I purchased them I was disappointed at how cheaply they were put together. The inner border is plastic. But you can’t tell when they are together. Yes, when it’s all done I’ll give y’all a tour of my kitchen. I feel a little silly at how much fun I’m having. I’m almost done with the cupboards but the desk is looming. That’s all my paper stuff. Argh! Baby steps, one at a time.

  5. Carol, how stunning your kitchen will look! And when you’re having a tough day and aren’t sure what to cook, you can look to your walls for inspiration! I’ve got a few photos from last year’s garden of some veggies and herbs that I’ve been saving for when we re-do our kitchen. I’ve got to start thinking about creating some food still lifes (or start buying more issues of Cook’s Illustrated and steal your idea).

  6. I love them! Isn’t is amazing that something as simple as a veggie can be so gloriously beautiful. Edith Schaeffer used to suggest arrangements on the table as the centrepiece, which I have done. Summer veggies being different from autumn ones adds interest as well. looking forward to the done deal. Blessings and love, m in sc

  7. Hi, btolly “introduced” me to you (your site), and this particular post struck me most — the simple beauty of the vegetables, the colors, and the appreciation shown for them in the display caused me to pause and enjoy. 🙂 I shall visit again as I need some restful places in my life. 🙂 Blessings, Laurie http://www.adhdkids.info/desktop
