The Martyr of Solway (1871)
Sir John Everett Millais

Margaret Wilson, a Scottish Covenanter, is the Martyr of this picture.  You can learn more about her story here.  You can learn more about the painting here

Her epitaph:

Within the sea, tied to a stake,
She suffered for Christ Jesus sake.

  1. This story is sooo convicting and makes me feel so *small*
I own a book about the Scottish Covenanters and can only read one story at a time.  They make me sad.

  2. Rather scandalous story about the original painting….
About Thomas Hart Benton, I had to search for a better painting/mural to post, because the one I actually saw at the Nelson-Atkins was the Rape of Persephone….not exactly appropriate for my content!
Next week I plan to go back to my research in preparation for that exhibit this fall:  Tradition Lives On.
    Have a nice weekend.  Dana

  3. Interesting. I’ll need to get back to read her story. Dana and I have a great-great-great-greatgrandmother with the name Margaret Wilson. At least I think we do. I’ll need to go do a check on the ole family history. She actually went by “Ferguson,” her middle name. She was named for the captain of the ship, as she was born on the way across the ocean.
