Opera and Country: Two Peas in a Pod

Ironing is one of my least favorite chores.  So I end up letting it pile up until the basket, which is deep, is heaping over with wrinkled clothes.  Some of my favorite coping mechanisms are to listen to a book on tape while I iron, call a relative and talk all crook-necked for a while, listen to a sermon, or listen to music.

Today I’m listening to the Three Tenors Live.  I opened the liner notes and read the words in English.  Guess what?  Opera lyrics and country western lyrics have A LOT in common:  women are fickle, my love left me, I can’t live without you, I loved you and you mock me, you lied to me!  It doesn’t have the twang and any lyric sounds better in Italian.  I’d call opera and country fraternal twins. Who knew?

  1. Congrats on wearing the *old* jeans.  Doesnt it feel gooood to slip into those straight(er) skirts?!
I hate ironing, too, and really only iron right before I wear something.
When’s the wedding?  Our DD#1 is tying the knot 12/27/06.

  2. There is a musical called ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’…it has a dog *in* it…
There was an interesting  PBS program late ne night last week., about music and the effect it has in peoples lives, more specifically the folks in the Philidelphia Symphony. Even hoity-toity orchestra folks (like me) have their musical alter ego. One trombonist just loves to play with a Salsa band after performing his licks with the Symphony, one of the horn players has his Masters degree in Jazz performance, and on tour they found a street guy that playes Vivaldi’s Four Season on the accordian. Very interesting to know that we can like all types of music and still be true to our calling in music, what ever that may be…Classical/Baroque/Country(selected)/70’s softrock…Chicago, Beatles (early), Carly Simon, Carol King…Starland Vocal Band, Captain and Tenille… Lawrence Welk (in re-runs)…
