Book Quote

As you read a book word by word and page by page, you participate in its creation, just as a cellist playing a Bach suite participates, note by note, in the creation, the coming-to-be, the existence, of the music.  And, as you read and re-read, the book of course participates in the creation of you, your thoughts and feelings, the size and temper of your soul.
                                  ~   Ursula K. Le Guin

I used to play the cello and it remains my favorite instrument.  I’ve verrry excited that I will see the great cellist YoYo Ma in concert in two 1/2 weeks.  Le Guin’s connecting reading with playing the cello is brilliant.  What are you reading this month?

  1. I love this quote! Thank you for posting it…You get to see Ma? Great!  where will this be happening?… let us all know your impressions of the event!
As you know I recently took the bassoon up again…one thing I knew I was missing all those years of not playing, was the beauty at the end of a piece well played. As the final note rings out, there is that special something if there has been a meeting of the musical abilities…sort of a ‘purer than the last time’ kind of moment…
I am reading, really re-reading, Lewis’ space trillogy, but the ‘first read’ was so far in the past that it all seems new and I am older now. I have completed _Out of the Silent Planet_ and _Perelandra_ and yesterday dove into _That Hideous Strength_.   There are so many things about each of these texts that are similar to our society today (no, not the interplanetary travel part…), or at least the horror stories one sometimes hears, perhaps as urban legend. Manipulation of our society by the media, the politicians and education system is still rampant…

  2. Luke always wanted to try the cello. Alas, my violin just would not suffice. The cello is indeed a beautiful instrument. Such depth and richness of tone. I played viola for about 4 years in jr. high and high school and enjoyed it. I never owned one, though, but used the school’s. I do have a violin that needs some repairs. Maybe I could actually start playing again?Blessings,Sandy
